Brick Floor

We moved into a stone built thatched cottage in December and have since been reading advise on this forum which has been very informative. Last week we took up a fitted carpet in the lounge to find an old brick floor about half of which had been cemented over to level. Having removed the cement l now have to find about 50 reclaimed bricks and clean up the rest. Any advise would be most welcome.

Finding 50 bricks shouldn't be too hard. If you live in my corner I could tell you where to find some but there's no point carting them halfway across the land. Where are you?

There's nothing wrong with using reclaimed bricks for your floor repair, but likewise there's nothing wrong with using new bricks that match the old. This would be an honest repair.
If you still want to go the route of reclaimed, I suggest you look in your Yellow Pages for local architectural salvage yards.
Unless you are in Biff's area, in which case it sounds as though he might be able to help you out.

Hi Biff, the property is near to Peterborough Cambridgeshire, when l retired 12 months ago we started to look for a modern low maintanance property but ended up with a pair of 300 year old cottages knocked into one, still small 2up and 2down with the dining room/kitchen converted from a pigsty. Just giving a bit more background, l have a feeling l may be back with more questions if thats ok.

I know a bloke in Louth who has a large selection of floor bricks and tiles for sale but thet's quite a long way from Peterborough. There must be somewhere neare. Peterborough is where they made most of the universe's bricks.

Have you tried solopark nr babraham just south of cambridge.. ? not the cheapest salvage yard by any means but they have a vast quantity of reclaimed and repro building materials so it'd seem a good bet they'd have something suitable... they have a website so give them a google and see if they look any good
