After the old tumble mixer died I decided to bite the bullet and splash out on a new mixer, and am now smitten (if it's possible to be smitten by a large lump of steel). It makes short work of any mortar or plaster mix, and copes wonderfully with bags of pre-mixed mortar that conventional mixers just roll around in balls for half an hour. And, given that I've got three tonnes of pre-mix that I've been avoiding using because knocking it up is a pain in the posterior, that's no bad thing. The mixer's built like a tank (and weighs almost as much), but does a grand job (http://www.refina-uk.com/pdf_08/p21.pdf)
The downside is that it's such a big b*gger that I'm now contemplating a smaller paddle mixer than I can manhandle into the back of the truck, and a small one from the Baron range is tempting (http://www.baron-mixer.com/default.asp?site=view&pid=10&lid=2&id=103) as it's even easier to lug around than the bog-standard Belle and does a much better job with putties and plasters.
