It's interesting (to me) that they focus on the terraced housing in the northwest. I've lived in one the Coronation-Street-type houses, and I was surprised to find it wasn't cramped, the ceilings were pretty high and the build quality was quite substantial. If they are well maintained, some of these houses would last forever.
Sadly, many streets are visually spoiled by unsuitable new roofs, picture windows (where there were two sashes, separated by an iron or stone column), plastic double glazing, cheap front doors, and all-over paint jobs. These houses have been disregarded for so long, and many badly neglected. But there are streets that are hanging on.
Where these streets break down is in the social aspect. The alleyways are an open invitation to kids, yobs and burglars. There's isn't always enough parking. Fronting onto the pavement can make for a feeling of lack of privacy. In the backstreets, where there's little traffic, kids play noisy ball games. The party walls don't offer enough in the way of soundproofing. Some streets have been pretty much vandalized out of existence.
If you're going to live in one of these streets, a lot depends on a group concensus for 'behaviour'. For instance, loud music in one house can affect everyone.
And yet, in other areas - just 2-3 miles away - where property prices are high, very similar houses have been bought and sold as "artisan's cottages".
