black enamel bath *LINK* *PIC*

Hi,
i have just bought a black cast iron bath and sink from a reclaimers yard and don't quite know how the taps and fittings should go.

The taps are to be set into the wall, however, i don't know where the faucet should come out (i.e. out of the wall or the bath). The bath has a hole where the overflow should be, but i don't know if they had overflows or if it is for the faucet. The faucet doesn't protrude very far.

Also, where would the taps be placed? At the end of the bath or along the wall (the side wall)? There is also a soap dish, would that normally go low down near the bath along the wall> or higher up at the bottom end of the bath near the shower taps (which also come straight out of the wall.)

Also two of the button things on the taps (the H and the C's), are missing. Any ideas where i could get hold of some more?

And the sink has no pedestall, so the u bend drain will be visible. Is there a nice metal finished 'u bend' on the market that i could use?

If you can figure out the maker of the taps try them first for the missing bits.. I bought some bristan taps off ebay with a bit missing and the sent out the part free of charge so you never know your luck.. otherwise plumbers supply places should be able to order generic ones as long as the size isn't too odd.. you can get nice looking chrome waste pipes at plumbing supply places too but not sure if they do any other finishes..

I rackon the hole at the end, above the waste hole is for an overflow. As to where you should mount your taps, soap dish et al... they must have been wall mounted (the shape of the bath was clearly designed for being placed against a wall. As to where on the wall they should go (taps, soap dish, etc) - it's your bath... put them where you want them!

I wrote a long reply to this and then it said file not found and it vanished!

However - with such a wonderfully decadent bath (which I hope can be successfully re-enamelled) I'm sure that you will wish to share it! So I'd consider wall mounted and in the middle, if that's possible (there may be restrictions re pipe runs).

We had a plumber who said it couldn't be done in a previous house of ours - so we did it ourselves with flexible copper pipe and a lot of swearing.

Re u-bends - I reckon any upmarket bathroom suppliers should have those in a variety of finishes.

Hi , I have a similar bath albeit in pale green and the hole above the waste outlet is where the water spout would have originally been , hence the limescale stain . I removed the spout and replaced it with a Bristan hexagonal chrome 'Deco' overflow and used wall mounted taps and outlet .

There is a set of original deco wall mounted taps with outlet on ebay at the moment and as they match your basin taps I think they'd be ideal.

Chrome sink waste traps in various designs are available from any good quality bathroom stockist/plumbers merchant.

I've got a set similar somewhere! (I bought years ago and never used...) Will be interesting to see how much they go for!

I agree re overflow - we have a bath without one and one day I am sure we will have a flood.

I don't think you've got much choice about where to put it. From the photograph it looks as though it was designed for (and installed in) a corner.

thanks for the link to the taps on ebay. Too late, however... never mind. I do have taps for the bath, but not everything is there - i just have the top part of the taps. But i'm sure i will be able sort it out.
I do like the idea of putting in an overflow and getting a longer 'spout' for the tap.

i'm sure it will look great.
The place that is going to re-enamel it used to enamel rayburn stoves - so he said he can use the same black used on the tops of the stoves...

It sounds very attractive at first - no bath ring to show when you are filthy after doing some major work on the house! However, I recall friends who had a dark blue bath when they were fashionable said you git white soap scum instead.

Life just ain't fair is it?

However - yes, proper Rayburn enamel should do the trick - and what a smashing thing to have! I think champagne must be swigged while lounging amongst the bath bubbles...

I have a friend who recently bought new repro quality Deco taps - they look great - I'm sure you will find something suitable (at a price).

Lucky bugger. Realise though that you'll never keep it clean, it will always look dirty. Thats precisely why you rarely see black baths. Its no coincidence that its in the state it is.

With white baths one can bleach anything that wont clean off easily, maybe you'll find something that will make blacken the muck. I know that doesnt sound too appealing, but live with it for a while and I think you'll see what I mean.

You're getting it stove enamelled? Thats the best option, but t'aint cheap. Cheaper paint on finishes are far less durable.

The perfect bath colour is (was?) Champagne. Showed barely a mark and needed cleaning only on grounds of hygiene.
