Are you all snowed under?

I tried to go out to the wood shed, I had to force the back door through 2 feet of (period) snow drift to get it to open.

I am trying to remember where i left the shovel.

( the grandkids are already up making a racket, I overheard my daughter ,from next door, telling them to go and see " grandad" for a snow shovel )

Quite a bit here, but it started to melt just after it all settled and thankfully did not re-freeze overnight, otherwise it would be lethal out there this morning! Still a reasnoble amount of snow left this morning, very slushy now though, not much good for snowballs, snowmen or letting the kids go on their new sledges which have been hidden away for weeks

I went out last night, the traffic was absolute chaos. Feeling very smug as I got myself a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on for the car during the summer - I can't believe how much of a difference they make. Last year in the snow the "family bus" (Ford S-Max) was nearly undriveable in the snow, a combination of a heavy car on wide low profile tyres meant you got practically no traction - it was by far and away the worst car on snow that I've ever driven. This time round, well it wasn't quite as good as driving on a normal wet road but it wasn't far off, a massive improvement.

Feeling very smug as I got myself a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on for the car during the summer - I can't believe how much of a difference they make.

I do about 25,000 miles per year, mainly on rural roads in the Highlands and the difference that decent tyres make - summer and winter - is amazing. I find that modern 4-season tyres are really good on snow and ice and also way better in the wet on fast, twisty roads the rest of the year. I'm currently running on these and can't fault them.

800 feet up and we have no snow, and 7 degrees and sunny forecast today in N wales. 8)

So funny to see the London-centric Beeb report in hysterical terms how 11 flakes and "upto" 6 inches of snow is causing gridlock elsewhere, is a "total nightmare", is the end of the civilised world, etc. They are curently screaming "Snow traps up to 100 motorists on M40 for many hours"!! ... then reportsthat "upto" 100 were stuck for 3 hours. "Upto" 100 probably means that they guessed from their traffic-cam picture that about 3-dozen cars were in a jam. :roll:

It is probably a mild convenience, and actually quite pretty on a Sunday morning.

When I was a lad, we had 19 feet one night, and the open-top school bus still made to through the bizzad. And we still had our swmming lesson at school that day. In the outside pool. Before walking home barefoot. And when we got home, we couldn't find the house because another 19 feet had fallen.

But we didn't complain that year. We just assumed having some wintry weather in winter was what happened in winter, and wasn't a great surprise or cause for alarm. :wink:

We had to walk to school. On our hands to stop our shoes getting wet. And we didn't have any shoes either. Times were hard etc etc cliche cliche :wink:

I'd wondered about 4 season tyres Worms, but thought they may be a bit of a compromise - the compound on winter tyres being softer than summer. Winter tyres are supposed to be better at 7 degrees or below than summer tyres, but when we first switched I noticed that they didn't have as much wet grip as the summer tyres we run. I suspect that winter tyres only really come into their own once it gets down near freezing.

Yes, it's the middle of winter and we've had snow. Amazing!! I can't remember that happening for ...oooh...maybe a year.

And of course the BBC news was yesterday reporting that Europe is in the grip of a mini-ice-age!

It's unprecedented. We're all going to die!

I'd wondered about 4 season tyres Worms, but thought they may be a bit of a compromise...

ALL tyres are a bit of a compromise, unless you do like the F1 guys and change them every couple of miles to suit the weather! When I fitted 4-season I noticed a big improvement in both wet-road performance and snow performance. When I subsequently fitted real winter tyres (on the front, driven wheels) I noticed a reduction in road-holding, (cornering in the wet below 7 celsius) but didn't find them any better on snow than my previous 4-season ones.

Honest John, the Telegraph's motoring "Agony Uncle", strongly advises the use of winter tyres on all four wheels, regardless of which and how many are driven.

Well, there was just enough snow left as it turns out to take the kids sledging for a bit, so that's the important thing 8)

We have a 4x4 and it's a daschund called Solly! It was rather deep here this morning (8-10") and I had to carry him to the lane so he could walk down the tyre tracks. Once he'd remembered what snow was we couldn't stop him.

A rare sight this morning was a snow plough. I reckon the local council contracted with one of the farmers because we didn't see one at all over the last two bad winters. Makes a big difference around our way. The only problem is that some of the footpaths now have 18" of snow!

Ha ha yes I did think of that. The roof is a bit rotten in places. All coming off soon. Happily though, he's melting slowly and hasn't turned up indoors.
