I have been undertaking renovation of a run down Victorian stone built farmhouse and have discovered a fantastic stone archway buried beneath plasterboard. Having discussed with our CO it is intended to reveal the arch and accomodate it as an integral part of the house. However, someone in there wisdom, has slapped a nice thick coat of bitumen paint on the inside of the arch. Where this has been placed over whitewashed render it is not to bad to remove. However there are large areas where the bitumen has been painted directly onto the sandstone. Does anyone have any ideas how we can remove this without damaging the stone underneath? We were concerned about using chemical stripper in case the resulting mess seeps into the stone? Any advice will be greatly received.
