Big rug

I'm getting fed up with renovations, so I thought I would buy a big rug for my dining room so i only have to deal with the floor around the rug. I found one that is pretty much wall to wall at an antiques fair. Good price, Belgian, wool, impressive pattern, but now it is down, wow it is psychedelic. It will have a table and chairs on it that will hopefully calm it down, but it is too much I wonder?

Well as you probably know, not unusual for Victorians (or Georgian) to have only the outer edges of a floor finished. The cheap flooring gets installed in the middle and covered with a carpet.

I expect you'll be moving the tables and chairs out of the way to show it off to people.

We had a big red Wilton rug a bit like that, it felt too busy and you could lose biros on it. The search method where you look along the plane of the floor to spot any raised objects hiding in the pattern is useful for this (also good for lost cat biscuits etc).
When we did the logical thing and replaced it with a nice cream one the sense of loss came as a bit of a surprise. It'll grow on you PP

No, it's fine. Well alright it's a bit big. But that doesn't really matter because the colour palette of these Turkey-type carpets is pretty much the same so if you decide you like it you can always look, in vague and leisurely fashion, for a slightly smaller one. I think they go so well in a period house.

As you probably know, a degree of colour co-ordination helps when decorating a room. The wallpaper paint furnishing fabric curtains... carpet... should as least share some degree of colourway.

If one is starting from scratch, the most restrictive palette is the carpet whether it's a modern monocolour, or a generic Turkey rug such as this where the key colours are typically red blue cream and sometimes with muted browns and oranges like the one I'm sitting on, anyway given the restriction in palette the carpet is the usual colourway starting point; then the curtains &/or furnishing fabric as there is a greater range of colours so matching is easier; then the wallpaper; and finally the paint which of course is available in an infinity of tones.

we have a large purple only rug - oh it's a bugger for keeping clean - I to fed up of having to hoover it three or four times a day [we have cats and a dog] - it's now rolled up awaiting it's fate. I quite like your rug.

I think it looks like it's far too big for the room. I think you can stand a rug that "busy" only if it's surrounded by a plain section of floor, so it doesn't completely dominate the room like yours does. I've not seen one laid almost wall to wall before.

I think you are right. I was hoping to get away with it so that I don't have to paint or varnish much of the floor around it as I'm lazy.

Thanks, yes those light switches are great. They conform to modern regs and there are no wires on show if you spin the fronts off, but they are genuine brass and ceramic and look like the real thing. Ther can even be used as two way switches!!

Not sure of the market in Briton but here near antique Persian rugs can be had for cheap, well relatively cheap. No body wants Victorian any more, it’s not the latest trend so Victorian is going cheap.

I'd be inclined to say it's too big too. It should have about a foot clearance on all sides to look right. However I quite like the psychedelic pattern.

Thanks, the rug is a true hand knotted Persian I bought at auction. It suits the period furnishings.
