Best way to fill oak

After relaying the origional floorboards in Merchants House we need to fill the origional nail holes and a few other defects and be able to be able to match the colour and accept an oiled finish later.

I have been saving the sanding dust so far thinking it could be mixed with a glue or resin to be used for this.

Any ideas please.

Hi Jon.

You are on the right track. Use clean fine "cross cut" saw dust from similar oak, mix into a thick malleable paste using waterproof woodglue ( do not use polyurethane glue), clean nail holes with pointed scraper and hoover, insert some neat glue into cleaned holes, use a blunt nail to push the thick paste into hole and leave slightly "higher" to allow some sanding, sand level after 12 hours or so. It will look very nice, if there is some previous rust dicolouration around the holes it will blend in to look like oak Knots.

Gosh, that's a bit picky. I just srape up whatever's lying about. Dust from the sander for small holes.

P.S. Actually, what's lying about probably is clean fine cross cut dust from similar oak, now I come to think about it.

Best not use the steel chisel and nail to poke it in though those bits have started to cure a bit darker I think certainly what was on the chisel went jet black. Did not seem to go through the purple phase though.

Used an old credit card no problem.
