The CO having kyboshed our planned 'porch' across the west front of the cottage, we are left with a couple of water-related problems.
The first is that the elm door gets splashed with water cascading off the thatched roof - whether the cascade can be prevented I shall post about on another day - and over the years this has taken its toll, so that the base of the door & its waterboard has become somewhat rotted and woodwormy. Not disastrous, but not good.
In the past the door has been coated, probably with varnish as PO was not into anything outré. This has pretty much worn thin.
What would be best as a clear protective waterproof coating? I am not interested in changing the natural colour.
Fortunately, the door is not subject to bleaching, as it faces north and that great enemy of wood, the sun, does not fall on it.
