Best chimney cap?

I need to cap off the pot of a disused chimney, to prevent rain from entering, but allowing ventilation.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to the best type of cap to use, please? Half-round tiles seem to be traditional around here, but I just wondered whether 21st century technology has invented anything better.

I've used the bog-standard terracotta caps from Jewson's - they're hefty beggars with a shallow domed head and perforated sides. Can't remember how much they cost, but it wasn't exorbitant.

I have used terracotta side perforated chimney caps as well, to cap off old chimney pots.

Can get them from any average builders merchants, the bigger merchants usually have them in stock. They only sit about four inches higher than the pot, they look like a flying saucer or a " frisby".


Last time I purchased one it cost £9 + vat.

( If you fancy discus throwing and fancy yourself as a good shot, who needs ladders :wink: ).

theyre called elephants feet.

as they look like upside down elephants feet.

some will actually fit inside your chimney pot and then get mortated in, some need the chimney pot off.

it all depends on the style.
