Who, Rob or humanity in general? If the latter, probably about 10000 years ago in Britain; Rob could only have started 30 years ago.

humanity in general. its just that i have a feeling this could be mud and stud.

i read that the inside studs are normally exposed while the exterior of the building was coated in daub , thats pretty much what is going on here.

That's about as muddy and studdy as it gets.

Round here the tradition is to cover everything, inside and out, with lime plaster, with perhaps only the largest timbers exposed on the inside.

this is the outside of an old exterior wall that is now in a lean-to. this unplastered part of the lean-to was an old wood store however i suspect that the whole lean-to which stretches along the back of the house from gable end to end was once partitioned into four small separate rooms so perhaps the rooms could have been used to house animals. the plastering was definitely an after thought.

A fabulous place. In fact I like the look of it much for the same reason as I like the look of 'random' Elizabethan places with their later additions. So much more engaging than perfect Palladian symmetry, if you ask me.

Well, delight is a very personal thing, but perfect Palladian symmetry is uniquely satisfying, and has enthralled for over 400 years, so don't be too dismissive, or I'll lock you up in the Villa Barbaro until you've learned better manners, ok? :wink:

Still, Biff's posted building is fab, and huge congrats to Rob,who's clearly done a lovely job.

Oh, Palladian can still be impressive and beautiful, and mainly when it's in its rightful place: Italia. Indeed, his mathematical approach was / is quite brilliant.

But one could say that Blenheim is Palladian, and to me its 'impressive', but beautiful it ain't. In fact, it's really just a huge piece of gratuitous self-congratulation.

As I understand it, that wasn't uniquely Lincolnshire-ish by any means. Pre-Victoria, I believe the exposure of studwork normally only took place if you had the money to pay for decorative mouldings on your timber frame, or if the characteristics of the structure made any other technique difficult (as with the large timbers mentioned by Biff).

What a great job Rob Ley has done, Biff. I don't suppose he has an online photo album of the works, has he?
