Belfast sink help

I have had new Belfast sink for about 2 months and I just cant stop it leaking around the 1 3/4 plug and into the void underneath, I have used plumber mate, silicone, hemp (got damp and stunk to high heaven) with no total success. Can anyone help as I am getting close to getting the sledge hammer on it!!!!!

We have these in school labs and it happens. The thing seems to be to strip away any old sealant perfectly before redoing it. The slightest bit left on the hole and the leak resumes.

if you can get a doughnut washer (usually for the rear of toilets) use this on the underside to seal the hole when you tighten up the waste. have you changed the plug and waste as it might have corroded causing the leak?

I cannot help much but our Belast Sink also had a small residual leak that would not go away.

I put silicon around both the under and top side of the sink, then put the plug backin.

It turned out the drip was coming from the holes we made in worktop for the tap, since put silicon under tap bases to solve.

I think what I am trying to say is (and I am sure you have already) double check it is not from further up.

If it is not that then just have to try try again.

Have you tried Fernox LSX? It's a gel that's specifically designed for sealing dodgy plumbing joints.

It doesn't need everything to be completely dry, in order for it to seal properly. In fact they suggest misting it with water to speed up curing.

It's always in my toolkit (which gives you an idea of the quality of my plumbing!).

As suggested above, mine worked with a fat doughnut washer and a run of silicone. Was a pain 'til I tried that though. The rigid washers supplied and B&$ were 'wholly' useless.

You really dont have to make it complicated.. :roll:

I've done several of these locally as a plumber.. undo the waste . the thread that goes throught the sink, take the nut off the bottom, check that its not corroded. and the nut not split
Dry the top bottom and middle with an old cloth /teatowel. if you want you can dry it with a hairdryer be careful of water and electrics.
once the sink is dry and the waste is is dry, add a bead of silicon under the rim of the waste unit where it connects with the sink, then use the donut washer add a bead of silicon to any surfaces that each side will contact, gentle do the nut up the thread, taking care not to cut /split the washer . Take care not to over tighten as this will cause seams that water can come out of.. an easy task!! that will be £40 from everyone using this remedy..lol :shock:

Just to confirm, the important joint to seal is the one at the bottom? The seal at the top doesn't matter as any leaks go to the same place as the overflow so its just the bottom joint that has to be water tight?

I've only fitted on sink and got it wrong at the first attempt. Was never completely satisfied I had it right on the second attempt, though it didn't appear to leak.

I used the silicone, rubber washer and hand tighten the nut method and all seems to be good. We will see later when I get home and test it out.

The main problem was that the crappy sink had excess glaze that had dripped down under the hole and stopped the washer making a good seal so with a bit of a chip I cleaned it up and got a better fit.
