Curtains arrived today, new bed linen went on, just a couple of odds and ends to sort and room 1, 5 years on will be finished...............

Can I ask you wether you used limewash on the walls ? In the photo they look a creamy colour. If it is limewash, how do you stop it running everywhere ?

It was caesin distemper, not quite as runny as limewash, but you stop it running everywhere by being very careful

Nice work, Graham. The timber-work in the corner is interesting. You obviously have a small window behind the curtains, with what looks like the frame of a similar small window on the adjacent wall.

Yes, but you've done it properly. I'd rather take longer and have it done well than rush and have a job that is not as good as it could be. Maybe that's why I always seem to live in a building site!!

Ah yes the old "fly cemetery" biscuits the only ones my granny used to have when we really wanted waggon wheels and club types! anyway back to the thread,great bedroom Graham.

I'm afraid biscuits are my downfall, but my Grandma always used to bring me a cup of tea and rich tea biscuit in bed when we went to stop with her, I blame her for my love.
I think it contains, dark chocolate digestives, rich tea adn custard creams at the moment!!
A good book, cup of tea and a biscuit or two, what more does a man want in the bedroom

The small window on the right used to be a doorway, as this part of the house was a seperate house some few hundred years ago and that was the doorway from the stairs. The doorway was blocked up. The other two rooms were pushed down in 1901 as the current owner deemed them unsafe!!
The curtains on the left cover french doors onto what will be a balcony, once planning is permitted.

Thanks for that, I wondered how you had managed to keep it off your wonderful beams, after all your hard work.
I used limewash for the first time last year doing the back of our cottage. It was on me, the garden shed, the floor, the windows.................. but I did manage not to get it on the church next door
When we get around to doing the sittingroom, I was hoping to limewash that but I fear for the safety of the flagstones on the floor :lol:

I did forget to mention one little fact...............

We'd put in new ceiling, which has been freshly plastered, and the en-suite (can't see) which was timber framed and newly plastered and we'd had plaster patches so the floor was totally covered in plastic sheeting and the room was totally bare.
The beams had been taped up for plastering, but as they'd been oiled this didn't stay on too long, so I used a 1/4" brush and great care when doing next to the beams, with an artists brush for corners and difficult to reach places and a 3" brush to fill in once I'd gone round the edges.

It did take 3 days to do the room, then I had to do it 3 times, so 9 days total painting time.

Congratulations on a great job Graham, and I can offer a top tip for eating biscuits ( and toast ) in bed, relocate to partners side of bed. That way they get the irritating crumbs to sleep on.

You must be feeling a great sense of achievement, your first room nearly finished. Well done. I too will be in the same position pretty soon. Nearly 1 down, 12 more to go. And as for eating biscuits in bed - no thanks, chocolate, now thats another matter.
