So the fires have been unsealed and pots with mushrooms fitted. You would not believe how many spiders were surviving in the sealed bedroom flies. Unsealed the dampers which had Been sealed with putty and found a foot high pile of woodlice shells in each. Consequently the wife is not too keen on me leaving them slightly open to vent the flues.

Insect mesh across the damper openings? Let the air through but stop anything coming out?

Are you regularly lighting it? I suspect a few fires would get rid of most of the debris.
