Bed Depth from Adhere Cal 25kg bag

Very specific question but I’m hoping somebody has used this product and can offer some insight.

Mike Wye’s website states a 25kg bag will cover 5m2 at a bedding depth of 3mm. Ty-Mawr’s website says 6mm bedding depth.

I really don’t want to under or over order and neither company seem to be able to tell me why their spec differs to each other. I need 6mm bedding depth as that’s what’s been left for the finished floor level after my limecrete flooring went in.

Page 3 on the data sheet from SecilTek themselves shows the consumption when using a No 6 bedding trowel (i.e. a bedding trowel with 6mm deep square notches) as between 5 and 6kg per m2. With a no 6 trowel, the ridges are 6mm high, but then the voids are 0, so when you put a tile on and compress it, you end up with an even bed of 3mm. So Mike Wye is the more correct of the two, but has taken the best case of 5kg per m2 for a 3mm bed.

Personally allowing for wastage when mixing etc, I'd go with the worst case of 6kg per m2 at 3mm bed depth, so 12kg per m2 at 6mm, i.e. a 25 kg bag would do you 2.1 m2 at a 6mm depth. Always better to have some left over than be tripping over a half finished floor while you wait for another delivery. Obviously if your tiling is very neat and non wasteful you might be comfortable in reducing that margin down a bit

That is super helpful, thanks so much. Ty-Mawr stood by their 6mm depth and told me to use a 10mm knotched trowel too.
But delivery is super expensive so the last thing I want is to have to purchase more and pay another £70 delivery charge.

Our room is 15.4m2 so would I be correct is estimating 8 bags for a 6mm depth?

That’s what I would go with, but do just double check my numbers to make sure you agree before you spend your money as it has been a long day!
