The final roughcast coat has been applied to the gable. They've done a great job and I'm again leaning towards unpainted. What do other folks think?

& the accumulated dirt over the years will show up far less than with any painted finish- particularly with the lighter paint colours you've been considering.

I've just looked at photo in your link Paul, in terms of tone, rather than colour, the bricks and render look reasonably similar, not too jarring etc, so although obviously theres a contrast in material, the effect is subtle.

The texture I think looks much more interesting than if it were painted a flat colour. And it's quite similar to the colour of the sketch you posted in another thread, the original drawing which you were trying to match.

Me too. I dislike unpainted roughcast - I think it looks drab and sad.

However, it's not my house. You should do what you will like best.

Thanks, Penners. I'm in two minds, leaning towards unpainted. If there are sufficient folks who believe its not completely bonkers, that's the way I'll go. It can always be cheered up later, I guess.

If you paint it, and then decide in years to come that you don't like it, how much effort/expense would be involved in undoing it?
On the other hand if you don't paint it, and then decide in years to come that you don't like it .......



and for what it's worth, I think that few things look drabber or sadder than painted roughcast that's gone past it's sell-by date

Unpainted looked fine on our previous house for 30 years, by a busy road + the airborne muck from Heathrow.

Unless you intend to run a Painters' job creation scheme.....

As Moo said. Leave it unpainted and see how it develops. You can always paint it if you decide after due reflection that you don't like it.

Just threw it on. Sticky stuff. That said, we've gained a pebbledash finish to the terrace below.

Hmmm - it'll be interesting to see how well the pebbledash stays on that timber, as time goes on. Given timber's propensity to expand and contract, I'd be inclined to keep an eye open for cracks.
