After removing 3 false ceilings from the downstars lounge ive found the beams to be in very good condition this maybe because they had wallpaper nailed on them at some point :? underneath the wallpaper was a lime wash covering,I like this look, what would be the best kind of lime wash mix to make and should I prime the beams with something prior to lime washing ?

Just bog standard limewash will do. Usually people strip beams but in their day they most probably would have been limewashed with the rest of the house. I rather like the look of limewashed beams my self.

Limewash is basically lime putty mixed in water , try to get a milky consistancy and brush on lightly, remember it will be translucent or even transparent until it dries or carbonates, this is when it becomes white. Spray with a garden mister full of fresh water once or twice day to prolong the drying. One coat of limewash per day for anything up to five days (5 coats) will give you a very beautifull ,soft finish. Dont be tempted to put on a thick coat , it will crack and craze and rub off easily.

I reckon a bit of bird poo in the limewash might be a good additive for something...
