I have been asked by a builder to get calculations and sketches from a structural engineer to show how to possibly strengthen a structural beam in my listed 17c cottage. The beam is 4 m long and about 220mm w by 200 mm h. It holds up the first floor (2 bedrooms). The beam has quite a bit of insect damage - and I have heard the deathwatch beetle myself. I am hoping the beam can be repaired.
However I had a quick response from one engineer already (without seeing the beam) saying the beam dimensions are not up to current standards ('not justifiable'). So will an engineer really advise on repair or just give me bad news the beam's not big enough?
Any experiences or thoughts would be welcome.
