Hi,
About to start decorating a quite large area of my house and in that we'll be doing a bit on the beams, previously some of the beams have been coated in boiled linseed oil (by a tradesman we used for some work) over whatever they were originally stained with and it doesn't look bad or suffer from the stickyness that I have read about.
Our beams are a bit wormy and do suffer a little from flakeyness in places so I'm not sure what other things I could get away with, the only other thing I can think of is just use beeswax, however this could be difficult due to all the holes from worm and aforementioned suface condition.
They have just been stained a sort of brown colour, house was renovated between 10-15 years ago, these bits date back to 1670ish.
Cheers
Sean
