A day in Southwold last week reminded me of the joys of the traditional seaside beach hut.

(I often visit... this time I was allowed to look inside a thatched ice house...)

Next time you're over this way, I recommend a visit to Waxham Barn (20 mins north of Gt Yarmouth)

taking in Horsey Wind Pump on the way

TM 37 SW HEVENINGHAM HALESWORTH ROAD 8/78 Icehouse 350m. west south - west of Heveningham Hall - II Icehouse. Early C19 with C20 repairs. Brick dome of c.3m diameter with an entrance passageway to the north, both half-buried and with a thatched roof. Crowstepped entrance gable with outer plank door, the inner door now missing.



The thatch was being repaired and the two thatchers invited me over the fence with camera to take some shots, including a look inside. I have a great interest in ice houses and cold stores so it was really exciting (yes yes I know, I should get a life...)

Didn't get into Norfolk - Essex and into Suffolk, rapid tour inc Clare (nice church and cream tea...) Kersey Lavenham Framlingham Long Melford Aldebrough (Adnams at the Cross Keys) etc.

Saturday went to Wisbech, place I intend returning in future for more exploration - wonderful buildings (cream tea at Peckover House...).

Kersey, Lavenham and Long Melford - you described an arc, carefully avoiding Penners Towers by about 3 miles.

However, we don't serve cream teas. Vetoed by Lady Penners after my last, foolish venture on to the bathroom scales.

I recently read an article on beach huts in the Times online and the Southwold huts were going (if I remember correctly) for 40k. My cousin had one in Lowestoft and it cost her 5k, but that was at least 5 years ago.

My posh bathroom scales have given up and died.

I understand that the Southwold huts vary in price, but forty grand has been rumoured for some. It depends I gather where yours is situated.

There are some in other resorts which have been known to go for over 100 k, but those you can sleep in for part of the year.

My review of ice making and cold storage on Tyneside is done in draft and just awaiting tech approval from my ex who was a time served fridge engineer.
What are these things called "lives" and where do you get them from? Couldn't find any on eBay....

I don't agree. I'm a first-class nurdler. On occasions I've also been known to tiffle.
