Bathroom Storage

I'm looking for bathroom storage and I'm struggling to find functional but lovely cabinets. Any ideas?

that's always the aim but not always the reality. All I can find is glossy stuff which is fine for a new build but not for a period property. I dislike shopping at the best of times and I'm really being tested in the search for appropriate stuff

Yes, added to the problem of "only the glossy stuff" is that the fashion seems to have turned back to pedestal sinks and I need a 'period' sink unit. I have a beech wall cabinet which came from ikea a few years ago but they seem to have discontinued that range now. I am tempted to adapt an old hardwood wash stand that we currently have as the drinks cabinet. (And no, we don't store the whisky in the bathroom!). It is a piece of furniture that would originally have had a marble top but this has been replaced with a trashy piece of softwood by a previous owner. It could conceivably take a piece of modern counter top to accommodate a sink. Otherwise I might look for some other piece of old furniture to do a similar job on, as I don't think there is an off-the-shelf answer that Is affordable.

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe a marble top? Only a small piece so perhaps within budget and would look stunning

I made this from the curved doors and frame of an old oak sideboard, the top was from an ex-school teak workbench.
The upper part of the front was plywood on a curved frame, wallpapered.
It was all varnished - the wallpaper was done with paper varnish - and still good after 20 years when we sold the house.

The important thing with a sink/basin unit is that you be able to get your feet underneath when using it, otherwise one's back is bent, very uncomfortable. You see here how the 'skirting' is set back from the front.

I think antiques represent the best value for money and give the most sympathetic setting to an old house, but it's a personal view. I'll be going for 20s/30s styled white bathroom sanitary ware, black and white tiles, and black lacquer cabinets, or possibly the mirror fronted cabinets. In the other bathroom I want a Chinoiserie fantasy with japanned furniture!

Sonya - I've just seen an old pine washstand for sale on our local (SE London) forum that could be the solution to your problem.
Not that I'm suggesting you buy this particular one, but I reckon that you could pick something similar up locally quite cheaply. The one on sale here has been painted shabby-chic style and had the marble top adapted to house a modern(ish) basin+plumbing.
