Bathroom Lighting Problems

Could any one give me some advice on lighting in a bathroom.

I have removed the bathroom ceiling in my 1820's cottage and have revealed all the original timbers in the roof space. We decided we would leave this exposed and have the pitch showing in the bathroom. We have had insulation put in between the timbers but found that we did not have the depth to put the ceiling spots in that we had originally planned. I have searched to find what i can buy that does not look modern, as the lighting will probably have to attached to the beams, running the cables in conduit to safe guard it. Does any one have any info or ideas that could help me over come this problem.

It's a tricky one as, if the building inspector is involved, the all items used within a certain distance of bath, basin, WC etc have to conform to IP44 water-resisting standards, which may narrow your choice.
If the BCO isn't going to be involved, and you don't plan to sell the place in the next few years, then anything goes. Something pendant in a frosted ogee glass shade could look the part...

Thanks for the reply's.

I will definately be conforming to the IP rating, but i just can't seem to find any thing that looks suitable for the room, particularly as they will have to be fastened to the beams. Everything i have seen in the shops are the modern stainless look, which would not suite the style of bathroom as it is very traditional. I have been told to look for some "Barn Style Lighting", i have trawled the internet but can not find anything.

Their are some quite nice inconspicuous fittings intended for marine use, although you might need to think about a transformer.

I watched a programme recently where a couple bought fitments, lights, taps etc for a bathroom, then had them professional dipped and replated in copper, they looked great, so if you found a style that you like you could go down this road. I checked it out on the internet and there are lots of companies that do it, and definately something to consider.

One possible way would to be to use "brick" lamp holders and set them in the walls just lower then the the boards, this way the cabling gets hidden as well. You are then left with the task of hiding the very plain stainless steel surround. Luckily its more or less a small picture frame, so perhaps a Louis 16th gilded surround held to the stainless trim from the back by little self tappers could make for an interesting effect. I would only use CFLs or the frame miight bake.

Ah yes, but to have a bathroom in 1820, you must have been at least royalty , because the serfs would have had only a tin bath in front of the fire (like what I have as a kid )
