Bathroom floor levelling Victorian house

Hi. We have just had a new bathroom suite installed and the vinyl flooring has been ripped up. Underneath are large thick tiles. These are now damaged and the floor needs to be made even to allow new vinyl flooring to be fitted. Is it ok to use self-levelling compound, or should the tiles be taken up and plywood be fitted instead.

Best course is to lift the tiles.

You might get away with self levelling on top but if it doesn’t work and you get breakages etc then you’ll have thrown a load of money away as the whole lot will then have to come up.

Do it once and do it right and all that

Thank you both for your replies. The tiles are definitely going to be lifted now. Is self levelling compound the correct thing to use or is there a better alternative? The floor is a mess to be honest.

I'd definitely take up the tiles.

I guess it depends how uneven the floor, I would try and level with plywood first before opting for self leveller. Are you paying for a fitter to do the vinyl floor? They should do all that first anyway.

+++ 100% remove tiles. Latex modified levelling screeds do not always have great strength or adhesion. Use WBP ply 18mm minimum.

Are the tiles damaged? I can't see much evidence of that in the photograph, beyond the stuck-on remains of adhesive. "Damaged" to me means massively cracked: half the tiles missing and replaced with concrete, etc.

Vinyl needs a perfectly flat, floated surface. The tiles are not flat. Floating screed on top is dangerous as the adhesion to the tiles may be compromised, ergo the need to remove tiles. The damage to any tiles is an irrelevant red herring. You could stick ply to the tiles then glue vinyl to that, but that's very janky.

The best thing to do would be to remove the tiles from the walls and put plywood over the top to make a surface that would be suitable for vinyl flooring.

David,you said remove the tiles from the wall, the OP is fitting vinyl to the floor, not the wall.
