Base for Victorian Tiles

Me again re my victorian tiles - thanks for the advice so far.

Another question - we are laying the tiles on a timber tongue and groove floor with ply on top - does that sound correct? Anything we should know or any tips before we start laying them this weekend?

No, it doesn't sound correct, not unless you're using a modern flexible adhesive.

The ply will need to be nailed down all over at 9" intervals to prevent flexing. Are you sure you'll never want to take up the floor to get at pipes, cables?

And of course there will be height issues at all the door openings, and architrave details to be managed and blended. Easy to make it look like Amateur Hour.

I would prime the ply with a thinned coat of something compatible with the adhesive, and let it dry thoroughly first, otherwise adhesion will be poor and the tiles will eventually lift.

And I would do more research than you seem to have done before starting the job, to be honest. Encaustic tiles are designed to be laid in a solid base, not on a wood floor, and I would want to be jolly sure what I was doing before I started. What's the rush.... :shock:

They used professional tilers. You might see if you can contact the OP and ask him how it's working out.

This article (if you trust it) has some info on floor structures if tiling onto suspended floors. However tiling onto ply sounds easier if you can get the levels correct..
