Barge boards

Could someone please advise what the best wood stain is to use on our black barge boards.

If it's specifically a woodstain that you're after, then Sikkens is about as good as you can get and will last much longer than many others on the market, plus they do a black, "Ebony". Use Cetol HLS Plus as a basecoat:-

Followed by Cetol Filter 7 Plus for 2 topcoats:-

I presume you want a woodstain so you can see the grain of the wood through it. As ever the preparation is crucial to the longevity of the finish. I used the above in a brown shade on my garage doors over 3 years ago, they still look as good as new - the joiner who made them for me came round recently and couldn't believe how good they still looked.

Alternatively, you could paint them black with linseed paint if you aren't so fussed about seeing the grain so clearly. Lots of old posts on here about linseed paint if you search.

I agree. You really need to know what has been used to black them before you can confidently choose a product to refinish them. Does the surface look and feel like paint, or might it be some sort of bitumen coating?

A good close-up photo might help someone on this forum to identify the current finish.

They are softwood. The builder had said he would use a stainer on what he replaced. The ones that were fine look like they have been stained too. On parts where they have started to flake slightly it certainly doesn't look as if an undercoat was used like you would expect if they had been painted. See what he used and weigh it up against the sickens cetol filter 7. That does sound pretty good. Don't want to do them again for a while!

By "stainer" I presume he means something like Sikkens or Sadolin. That's a decent choice for new softwood, but it won't necessarily be as successful over the top of a different finish. It all depends what the earlier finish is, so it would still be useful for you to try and find out.

In my experience stain - even Sikkens - has poor durability compared to a good paint system. The only advantage is that it's quicker to apply. Depends how easy it will be to get up there for repaints.
