Balcony help!!

Following on from the wonderful help I had with finding a bridge, has anyone used a balcony manufacturer they can recommend?
I'm looking for railings to round a flat roof.

I'm off to do some googling, but a good personal recommendation is worth it's weight in gold!!!

The bridge is nearly completed, only one screw to go, but I'm waiting for Jo's return so she can offically open it and be the first to cross it completed.... 'cos I'm nice like that

If you just want simple railings, have you considered getting a local jobbing engineering firm to quote?

Having just had a balcony installed, I couldn't find very much on the internet, but I was looking for a full wooden balcony rather than the railings.

You might find that decking suppliers will make all the bits you need, as look as you want treated pine.

In the end we had it made and installed by a local joinery company, not cheap, but pleased with the results.

If it falls down with one screw out of over 300 already in missing I'm in big trouble, but yes, I'll be screwing before.

Bower1, do you have any pictures?

I'm just about all wooded out, making the bridge and work in the house. I thought it might be a bit different to have some railings made from metal. Might be thinner and let in more light, making it look more open?

I've not taken any photos yet. I'll try and get some tomorrow.

I decided on wood in the end as it suited the house more. Most metal railing info on the internet seems to be related to the very polished metal finish which is not as suited to older houses. I think Penners suggestion of a metal fabricator is a good one.

Yes, a blacksmith perhaps? Although I suspect that hand-hammered wrought iron railings might require a hefty budget - depending on the size of the balcony of course.

It is amazing how one can jump to conclusion, screws and all that.

Half way through reading the initial post I was assuming that Graham's suicide attempt failed from the bridge and hoping to be more successful from a balcony.

If Jo gets home and finds that he hasn't put that last screw in, he may not need to think about suicide.

Will the flat roof cope with being walked on? both in terms of finish and strength.

I would also think that you would 'officially' need building regulations approval for both the railings (min gap requirement) and the strength of the beams in the flat roof. Unfortunately balconies are not easy to 'hide'.

I would think that it would be easiest to mount the railings onto the wall, so that you don't risk the roof leaking. That would work for both wood or metal railings.

Flat roofs are not noramally designed to be walked on so will probably require some work.

I believe that the volume enclosed by the railings also counts as an extension so will technically require planning permission. I could be wrong and it sounds a bit petty anyway. (Adding a layer of insulation / render to the outside of a house also technically counts as an extension so also requires planning permission. I doubt anyone bothers though).

Yes, already spoken to building control and to planning. I want to mock up a picture of what it may look like with them on to send to both. Planning permission will need to be granted but they will tell us if there should be any problems or not first. We don't overlook anyone, so in reality, so long as all the items are sorted properly, as in the roof strengthened and covered, railings right size as mentioned above then we shouldn't have a problem.

We thought it'd be best to go onto the wall rather than the roof for leakage reasons!

Now to find a picture of railings I can copy.
