.... not in the house unfortunately, but in the end wall of an outbuilding. It looks saveable I think? It appears to have been installed in a former doorway and seems a bit posh for an outhouse. I don't think it's been re-used from the house as it is too small.

Wow! Nice lintel - it looks a thousand years old. The whole thing is beautiful. I guess anything you do to it will "ruin it's character" and Finding a balance between romantic and practical is going to be tough.

Hahaha - indeed it does, probably a long time since anybody ran a cloth over it .....

No plans (well time, actually) to do anything with this at the moment apart from repairing the window.

Well I was just about to beg to differ ....

It wasn't concealed by the ivy, but the window was boarded off. I don't know how old this part of the building is, but the outer lintel has survived remarkably well considering it faces the worst of the weather. Inside there's a lovely curvy lintel in good nick.

We've recently discovered a blocked window (stone infill) in the side of the house after removing vegetation.

It's where I keep saying I would like a window... placed in an alcove and originally would have been to see when people were coming down the track.

It's very exciting isn't it - we found a little window in the side of ours, the best bit was the first look at the view, familiar but different when framed by the window

Do you think the window was a doorway at one time? The repair or fill stones look to go to the ground.

Yes, certainly it looks like it used to be a doorway.

When I posted I'd forgotten about this one which has been hidden behind stacked wood for so long I'd almost forgotten it was there. Not in quite as good condition as the other, but hopefully can be mended.

It's in a little building which was apparently used as a wash house for a time, but may have originally been a tiny cottage. It has an inglenook, which contains a wash copper and remains of a range.

Not much more to tell, really. It's cosy, probably only about 12' x 12' excluding the inglenook which I think might have been added sometime later. The wood used looks relatively modern when compared to the roof timbers, which are all blackened. The firehood has been constructed using lath and plaster, although the side is stone. The top of the (fireplace) gable end has at some point been re-built with little bricks (unusual here where everything is stone). The chimney itself is long gone.

The census return for 1861 lists two households here, my guess is that this was the other dwelling.

Here are some better pictures of that inglenook, now we've moved some wood that was stacked against it. Just wondering if there is anything about it that would would fit with the 1861 date on the census? I'm wondering if it might have been added around that time, or whether later on specifically to accommodate the wash copper and range.
