At Last - forum where I can bang on and on about the house!

Hoorah - It seems I have found group of people who actually might care that my 270 year old farmhouse is a massive decrepit white elephant and may be able to give pertinent advice.

We became the proud (ins. insane) owners of said house in November Last year thinking we would be moved in and growing own veg, having perfect glamorous dinner parties by March latest - I know, you guys have probably all been there and bought the t-shirt! - suffice to say it is a virtual shell at the moment - still, fingers crossed I think we've found just about all the problems - i can't believe they gave us a mortgage - were they mad?!

As to it taking far longer than you can ever imagine, I can certainly agree with that. I can see I will be working on my house for many years to come having only made a minor dent in the jobs that need doing over the last year. I've just starting pointing the stone wall inside the house and I'm not doing much more than a square foot per hour (though this does include some rebuilding of the stone work). It gets rather depressing when I work out how many hours in total this will mean I have to do...

Once you have stripped out everything that's beyond repair the only way is up. (That's what I keep telling myself anyway). If I had a pound for everyone who said 'you're brave, oh, but won't it be wonderful when it's finished.

Yep, I said I'd have the kitchen done in a couple of months, then by Xmas, now it's still by Xmas, but since we moved in March 2005 and we are now looking at Xmas 2007....... but with weather like this, who wants to be inside doing work........

it's nearing two years since we started the barn conversion and now it's coming to an end, sadly it will have to go along with the farmhouse as my husband's disabilities have taken a turn for the worse and we can no longer live here. I am regretting this move so much but there is no way round it. Very true that it's better to travel hopefully than to arrive ...

Yes - pointing - no wonder the husband and builders got together, showed me how to make a decent mix and then left me to it - I am doing decorative pointing on our exposed Kitchen stone wall when it rains (long may good weather continue!)

Despite uninhabitable house however we are still very upbeat about the whole thing (ignorance is bliss!)

And as one of you very kindly pointed out - it can only get better from hereon in !!
