All art appreciation is subjective. It may be the council is trying to avoid a precedent being set which, given some interpretations of what is art, could lead to something being painted on a building that would appeal to a far smaller sub-set of people than the orange Cephalopods do.

I happen to like it as a piece of art....but feel it is completely out of place. If they did it without the required consents etc. then I don't understand why they are surprised the council is insisting it is removed. It's easy to imagine that one could create various murals which others would object to....hence if the council doesn't act, you have a risk of them springing up all over the place.
As for the positive feedback - there were 21 comments on the website when I looked (hardly a huge number) and not all were positive. Besides, popularity is not necessarily a reliable measure of artistic merit.

Unfortunately the Orange Cephalopod Art Appreciation Society hasn't yet managed to recruit too many members in this area.Matt Green said:

This isnt a house guys , its a hostel for young ''surfer dude'' people. Also the positive feedback , apparently came from the BBC , neighbours , newpapers etc etc.
I think to say if they let this one stand everyone might want one could be argued but you could also argue that its a commercial premises and the wall art fits its purpose. On that basis if Joe Blogs wanted to paint his house the council could reject it because its not a commercial premises.

Oh dear, I wouldn't like to be one of the councillors dealing with this one. If I was, I would be feverishly seaching for the relevant and hopefully non-subjective bylaw that prevents such garish artwork being applied to buildings, so that I could cast my vote based without having to discuss the merits of the artwork.
Personally, I think it's entirely out of place. Imagine the entire street painted in a similar way - would that enhance or degrade the environment? I'd say the latter. Context is everything; this artwork would, I think, be fine in Disney World but it doesn't really suit a high street.

Ugh, me too. "There can be no private right to do a public wrong", said Sir Clough. And who decides on the wrong? For better or for worse - the council - not the website supporters of that artist.
Councils also like to force people to paint barns etc black , which could also be argued as being hideous and out of place.
I dont think butchers or funeral parlours would go down this road , its just not something they would do.
also this art can be painted over if the building is ever put back to residential use. Personally i think if no body objects then why not , its colourful , it suits the buildings purpose and it brightens up an otherwise dreary boring street.
Edit - If this is in the north then its the same councils who allow this.

Very artistic but against the law. As simple as that.
I am sure that the poor souls, that have no choise but to enforce law, quite like the artistic merit of the painting.
There is no point in having laws and regulations if there is nobody there to enforce it.

I can hardly see that as a relevant argument in this case. Yes, barns are sometimes required to be painted black - in areas where barns are traditionally painted black. That hardly constitutes "out of place".robgil said:

There was an excellent programme on telly last night that showed the front of Wells Cathedral as it is now, and then as it would have looked when every surface had been painted in very vibrant colours indeed.
The local expert commented that were it to be painted like that today there would probably be an outcry.

But we don't know if what they have done is against the law, I cant comment really as it is indeed in the south of Ireland and I don't know what conservation laws they have there , if any at all. I don't think the owners would have spent a lot of money hiring two artists to paint their entire building had they thought they would be doing it against a law, I certainly wouldn't.
Black barns are not traditional , its a very recent thing, traditionally these barns would have been painted all sorts of colours.
And in fairness it doesn't stand out that much , it kind of camouflages itself well with the surrounding paint schemes.

That is true but before and during that tradition it was also traditional to paint your barn whatever colour you wanted. 
And i am sure before the tradition of councils telling people what colour to paint their houses it was also traditional to paint your house what ever colour you wanted.
Apparently some friends of mine who sent me a link to the painted house who know the artists involved say the house isnt in a conservation area, i am not so sure , surely if it wasnt in a conservation area the council couldnt do much about it?
