Hmmm. With period buildings we tend to repair rather than 'do up'.

The VAT issue is one worth pursuing however. As is the lack of grant aid. Especially with the Pathfinders issue.

Yes, 'do up' is the wrong term. I basically mean restoration work, but was trying to make it sound better. There must be someone out there who's interested?

The VAT issue is one worth pursuing.

Tobystrutt - in case you're not familiar with this reference, it's certainly one that could be an important issue in your programme.

If a listed building is altered, the alterations can (if they satisfy certain conditions) be zero-rated for VAT.

But renovations to a listed building carry the full rate of VAT.

Bottom line: you can muck your listed building about free of VAT. But try to save its decaying original fabric, and you'll pay 17.5% extra.

Same with all buildings - new build carries no VAT, repair does. So repair to old buildings regadless of listing or not carries VAT.
