Are these original?

Passing through Shrewsbury recently, I noticed this rather lovely terrace with, to my eyes, somewhat over-elaborate entrance doors. I can't recall seeing anything similar before and am wondering if it's a 'Shropshire thing', or even if they are original entrances at all? Any ideas?

For those who know Shrewsbury well, this terrace is opposite the crown court buildings.

The details look reasonably 'right' for the period (I'd guess they're first half of the 19th century), more so than any off the peg equivalents currently available. I recall there's a similar terrace of modest houses with quite posh doorcases in Chichester, and some not entirely dissimilar tucked in odd places in Norwich, but not as visible as these.

An elegant c19 equivalent of those silly pillared porticos one used to see on tacky little new houses in Essex, and perhaps still so.

This recalls to me the days of my youth when streetscapes had not yet been ruined by the arrival of bongowood, aluminium, upvc. And owners painted their houses in a rainbow of colours. And one need not harbour aesthetic worries about buying in a terrace because there was no danger of next-doors ruining the visual harmony with new windows, or concrete roof tiles.
Mind you, the rainbow of colours could be an issue; I recall a bungalow I passed on the way to primary school, with the brickwork painted bright blue and the pointing picked out in pink.

Keeping up with the Joneses is nothing new, especially if you’re as close to Wales as Shrewsbury is!

Not particularly a Shropshire thing to my knowledge, but I would say they are original. Shrewsbury always was a “cut above” the nearby towns - most of which were more Industrial (Ironbridge) or coal mining based - so it was I think always a slightly higher class (or pretension to it at least) of housing there - compared to us oiks in Wellington, or Dawley, or elsewhere.

I hope you enjoyed Shrewsbury- lovely town - you could have popped in! Did you get to Ludlow whilst you were here in deepest darkest Shropshire? Worth the 1 hour detour, lots of nice buildings there.

We were on our way to stay in Portmeirion for a short break but decided to break the journey and stay over near Shrewsbury as we hadn't been there before - and it didn't disappoint. As it turned out we could have happily stayed for longer. I didn't realise you were so close - I'll PM you next time we're in the area.

Speaking of stopping over, our personal preference is to seek out farmhouse B&Bs as they are often interesting old properties and this time was no exception, although we've never managed to find such impressive farm accommodation as we did in your neck of the woods :shock:

Suggest probably are original as new build seem to like semi detached and varying styles of housing (at least near us). Probably owned by one estate that requires paint colour etc to stay in line.
