As one of the later posts on that thread suggests, it could be a long-horn beetle of some sort. I've occasionally heard them in the fire wood stacked at the side of the fire here in the UK but more frequently in the tropics. The rasping away of the wood can really get loud enough to distract you if you are sitting reading quietly by the fire of an evening. Somehow I can never bring myself to put the offending log on the fire, as the adult beetles are quite friendly beasts that do no-one any harm. Not sure I would feel the same way about one that was gnawing through my imported sofa!

It's an Asian Longhorn beetle larva. We have notified the plant health authority in Edinburgh because we don't want this in the UK, it has devastated trees in certain parts of the USA.

The UK Forestry Commission is now asking for similar help from the British public. There have been about 20 reported sightings of the beetle or evidence of its presence in Britain. Again, these have been in wooden packing cases from China but there have been, as yet, no cases of the insect attacking trees.

The Commission is so concerned about the threat, UK law has been amended to make it illegal for anyone to knowingly bring the creatures into the country. Anyone who finds the beetle should report it.

But remember that we have native species that are no threat!

Perfectly illustrates why a Commission rarely gets anything done. More sensible advice would have been to catch the beetle first, then contact them so they can examine it. Sending in a nice digital picture and a "report" of where you saw the little devil isn't exactly useful. By the time they get around to deciding it's a dangerous pest it will have gone off to meet Mrs Longhorn Beetle and have a happy family ooooops :lol:
