Anyone Know a Good joiner to make some Internal doors

Hi

I am trying to find someone or a company to make 5-6 interior doors out of either pitch pine or Douglas Fir to match some existing doors (Photo Attached).

Now I have contacted a local joinery firm and they are quoting about £850 per door! I thought that was rather a lot.

So does anyone know of a good joiners that charge reasonable prices who can help?

Ben,

The bulk of the cost is in the workmanship. Does your £850 include VAT?

for reference I had an oak door (ledged & clenched nails, plus ironmongery) plus frame and fitting made recently. It was a little more than you have been quoted.

Yours has a rounded top, and some panelling - which adds to the labour.

Others more expert will be along shortly, but I'm not sure £850 sounds massive for a good hand-crafted door.

Yes the £850 was including VAT but no ironmongery. That price was just for the door.

Also the doors we are looking for are rectangular and do not have an arched top.

I have no issue paying for quality but that price seemed to be rather high.

£850 sounds about right, if they're using top grade material and making each one to a specific size using traditional construction details. If all six are the same then you'd expect the unit cost to come down significantly, maybe to £600 each.

Doors I've done for folk have tended to be over £1000, but that's usually including installation as well.

You'll maybe struggle to find good pitch pine in the right sizes, but Douglas Fir (as used in the door above) will darken down over time to be a fair match. More pics of that door on my website.

Biff's a long way away, I believe, or I'd get him round like a shot, and we could all talk energy strategy while measuring the doors / windows!

A related question - which wood should my replacement door be made of? It will be painted white to match the others, so does the wood type matter?

Thanks for all of the advice. Looks like I will not be able to afford all of the doors to be customer made.

Currently thinking about having the 'feature' doors made and using something simpler/off the shelf for the others

To my mind if you aren't leaving the wood exposed (and I completely understand and agree with your rationale) then you may as well use inexpensive pine rather than oak or another hardwood. The only thing is it gets bashed more easily, but you aren't running a B & B.

Cost me £215 each made from reclaimed pine. OK they are not in Pitch Pine but look close enough.
