At last the expected has happened. Part of the bulging (50 yards by 8ft high) stone wall which borders my property, collapsed yesterday. Probably due to rain or tree roots. Trouble is, my garden comes to the top of it on my side and the public footpath and road is about 8ft down on the other side. This wall has stood for 2/300 years and chose the time of my occupancy to fall down. Although I have boundary wall and fence insurance, they say it’s not their responsibility.
Needless to say, within minutes, I had visits from, firstly the county council, then the police who put up a crime scene barrier, then the county council again who put up a barrier on the footpath (four men and two lorries), then a nasty little man from the district council who threatened me with 21days to put it right or they would do it themselves and bill me. All this within a couple of hours of it falling.
I’m just pleased that no-one was around when it fell.
Anyway, after a visit from one builder who wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole, my friend and helper and I decided, due to my limited finances, we would have a go ourselves. After all, how difficult can it be to remove a bit of rubbish, rebuild the wall and fill in behind with concrete? So we will be starting work on Monday.
The bit that fell is about 6ft long but I will have to take out about 12ft to tie in to the good parts
Has anyone any idea of the pitfalls that we will certainly come across by doing it ourselves and also I understand that you can get screw in ties which would go into the ground and then be concreted in an the wall side. Does anyone know about these and where I can buy them?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Geoff
