Any recommendations for Bespoke timber mouldings?

I need some timber Cornice and t&g board copied form original. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation on who can do this.

My local joiner will do it but is very expensive as it is not his usual work.

Shop around your local joinery workshops - it's the cost of the cutter for the spindle moulder that makes the difference, if you can find someone who already has one that is close enough it will save you a lot.

atainless steel cutters and followers with a cutting edge of about 100 mm in length, made to order to fit an existing block, costs about £125 inclusive of vat.

As suggested , unless someone has what you want " off the shelf" the above cost will be incurred by any woodworking shop that is willing to supply you with your needs.

Commercial production manufacturers are highly unlikely to stop their CNC/CAD production machines and reset the system to cut someone a few bespoke moldings.
It has to be your local(ish) woodworking shop.

I'd be a bit wary of anyone charging a flat "per m run" cost. As has already been mentioned above, the cutters are a substantial part of the cost, as is setting up the machine. If you only want a modest run - say 20m for example - then £5 per m doesn't even cover the cost of the cutters.

Whatever you end up ordering, be absolutely sure to order sufficient for all your needs in the one run. Repeat runs will cost you another machine setting-up charge.

I need about 50m of each, so I am looking at an overall charge of around £750. The £5 is actually £6.5 + vat so I was being a bit optimistic!

I can see within the £750 there will be around £150 of tooling charges.

That seems roughly in the right area. Then there's set-up time and machining time, plus the wood.

You might want to ask them what quality of pine they will use.

* "Fifths" will give you a fair population of knots, some of them black, dead knots.

* "Unsorted" (despite sounding like a worse quality) will be better. "Firsts to fourths" is the same as unsorted.

* "Clear" will be knot-free (but very expensive).

If it were me, I would insist that they use pine (redwood) and not spruce (whitewood).

I've had mine done in "unsorted" redwood. They've still got the odd dead knot, but that's fine - if I look at the original mouldings in the house then so have they, so once painted it will help the new stuff match in to the old.

I presume you painted knotting compound on all the knots before painting? This helps to prevent future resin weeping.

Don't be silly Penners. I only got the mouldings on Friday, that's FAR too soon to be thinking about using them yet. They have to lay around the house and get in the way for at least a couple of weeks first.

(My excuse is I'm conditioning them to the humidity of the building. Technically true, not really sure it would make that much difference with small architrave, 24 hours would probably do. But if Mrs F asks then 2-3 weeks is the minimum :wink: )

If your any where near Oxford
WG Powell's on the cowley Rd is whom you need.
They are mainly a good timber mechants --- but have a CNC machine for doing this sort of thing.
Don't know their latest prices myself - have a memory of something like £70-80/hr or part thereof including setup time plus of course wood costs.
I used them some years ago when I also was matching skirting/door architraving.
I gave them an accurate drawing of the moulding x-section and they matched it.....end of story

I went a bit mad today and simply produced a specification and sent it out to about 30 timber moulding companies I could find on the web for a quote. About 20 have replied with quotes.

W G Powell was one who replied and gave a reasonable price. Sounds like the front runner with a recommendation.

Might be best to do a feasibility study before anything as definitive as an actual assessment, and for such an important project a proper kit kat supply management system is imperative.

The best thing for moldings is to use them as soon as you possibly can. If left " hanging around " for any length of time there is a much better chance for them to contort in the shape of hoola-hoops.

I have a solution to that problem, Middi. Fix the moulding with one 6-inch nail every 12 inches, and straighten it as you go.

So long as you end up the job with more steel than wood, it should last a lifetime.

Sounds like a big job; may be worth waiting until Kit-Kats are BOGOF - you could save a bit of money on the project... :mrgreen:

Penners, the first job for these mouldings is finishing off some work on my daughter's new room. You have a daughter I believe - therefore, even if it was a while ago, I'm sure you'll understand when I say that no one can nag quite as well as a 6 year old girl, especially one who is on a promise that Dad will have her new bedroom ready for her birthday (on 3 May). My life will not be worth living if Miss F is not installed in her new luxury penthouse bedroom by then!

I just hope I don't have a start a new job before then - otherwise the pressure really will be on!

I identify completely with what you say, Feltwell, but I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you.

It doesn't get any better between the ages of 6 and 36.
