Any difference between lime plaster and lime mortar.

After getting all the external walls re plastered I’m left with a few tubs of backing plaster. It’s been in the garage sealed for about a year. The outside walls got lime pointed but they didn’t do the chimney. Some of the old cement pointing has called out plus the cement surrounding the chimney pots has blown off in the wind.

Is there any real difference between plaster and mortar. The backing coat was mixed at 1 to 2 and a 1/2.
I’m thinking of going up to fill the missing pointing to get it through winter and whatever named storm is coming. When I was a kid, it was just windy with loads a rain…

There can be. I've used a chalk-based lime plaster for all my internal walls and I doubt that would weather too well outside.

As for chimney pot flaunching, that's a very exposed position where breathability is less important than strength and durability. Our chimneys were repaired using an NHL5 lime mortar (might have been NHL3.5 - it was a while ago!).

But if it's just a case of 'getting it through winter' then I guess almost anything will be better than nothing . . . although beware of the 'temporary' fixes that never get done properly later on!

I used a cement mix with some added ballast for the flaunching.
