It's a c.1900 Welsh house, stone walls. In the living room, the exterior of the wall has been cement-pebble-dashed and the interior has been err, I think cement rendered with a gypsum skim. I can see the stone at the top (suspended ceiling removed and I can see where the 1st fl wooden joists go into the stone wall), then a layer of grey, what I guess is cement, about 1-2" thick, then a thin pink skim over that. The pink stuff if fairly easy to knock off the grey stuff but I had a go at bashing the grey stuff and nothing comes off.
We had a quote from a conservation builder to remove it all and redo it in lime but we can't afford it at the moment.
There is no immediate evidence that the wall is wet inside, but we want to take the interior render off and see how the stone is doing. The cement will eventually come off the outside, but without a pressing need, it's going to be at least a few years. But in the meantime I want to get it off the inside if I can. But how? Is it going to be power tools?
