We live nearby, and only last visited it a few weeks ago.
There is a volunteer group that have took over the running of it from the council and had reopened to the public. They were working on interior restoration and recreating the rooms with furniture and antiques. On a shoestring budget.
The oak frame was in great condition too, as it had not been messed about with. How they will recover from this I don't know.
So sad, this house started my interest in "things old" in the 1950s,sundays were,a trip to the park,a picnic,a paddle in the pool,a cornet from the cafe then into the hall. The staircase, the wall hangings, the canon ball on the window ledge, the smell of wax polish. How can it have got to this?.And also why did they move Cromwell`s statue from manchester to it`s place outside the hall?
Just read in The Telegraph that this was definitely arson. Apparently several fires were lit in the building with the clear intention of burning the whole place down. Thankfully not all of them took. Repairs are already under way.
