A Wrexham businessman has been fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £1,700 costs for partially bulldozing an historic mines rescue centre without permission.
Motor dealer Neville Dickens pleaded guilty to the unauthorised demolition of the listed building on Maesgwyn Road.
Two men he employed to carry out the work were also fined.

I have to rescue Neville from the ninth level of the inferno, because:

a) what he says in his defence is true...;
b) to my relatively uneducated eye, there is not much of merit to warrant the GII listing;
c) he rescued our football club a few years ago.

Admittedly, a) and b) are pretty feeble, but c) is an absolute clincher! 8)

He got fined so was in the wrong but from what the BBC page says it isn't the most blatant of offences.

Magistrates were told that hours after labourers Alan Newcombe and Ray Haynes began work on the site on 18 August last year the Welsh heritage organisation Cadw gave it Grade II listed status.

Reading up the previous history, it seems permission was given for a replacement building in 2004 (when it wasn't listed), but nothing was done. The permission was renewed (when it wasn't listed) in 2007, but nothing was done until CADW announced that they were considering listing it and asked for public comments. Surprise! - demolition then started within a couple of weeks. It continued after the listing was confirmed.

Hmmm...

a) How do you know?
b) I thought that buildings were listed for a number of reasons - historical importance being one (whether or not the structure is pretty).
c) If he'd rescued a rugby club, I could accept that in mitigation, but otherwise.... :evil:

I'm sorry, and no nothing about the building, but if he was given permission to knock it down and he did, he isn't in the wrong, however much anyone disagrees.
Of course once listing had been done, work should have stopped.
It's hard to tell from the linked report if council workers wnet in to secure the building and caused it to collapse further - are tehy going to be prosecuted?? Or if the actual builders went in to secure it and it fell down.

I have no objection for slapping wrists of unscrupulous people that do irreversible damage to listed buildings, as long as they are slapped with shovel with a six foot handle.
