Once upon a time (only three years ago, in fact) there was a lady called Jocelyn, who bought a house and wanted to take all the render off to make it look cottagey and "nice".
Then she found PPUKe and grew to appreciate the fact that the instant fix isn't always the right one. Within a month she was coming out with:

As soon as I saw this house I had that gut-wrenching utter "this is mine" moment, I have never experienced such love or excitement for an inanimate object, and I looked at hundreds of houses; this is the one forever! Despite everything I am more in love than ever.

And then she was hooked, and destined for a life of poverty and strife as she tried to do the very best, and not the very worst. Though I'd still like to know what happened with the unintended free delivery of oil, and the mysterious wooden moulding she found in the shed.

Thank you so much for the all the lovely birthday wishes, yes, very spoiled at the Swan, and also spoiled by you lot, not least for putting up with all my witterings when I first joined this very helpful forum!

Not yet - that will be next year, I'm 1973 (like Robin and yourself I think?) I think I plan to hide and hibernate!

Well, the oil certainly didn't end up being free, as I remember they gave very little of that away, if any. It should have been Michael's, and we didn't want to get on the wrong side of him, in fact, he's ended up being a good friend.

As for the moulding, I threw it on the fire one cold night. But I think it was a pretty unremarkable remnant of an old bit of repro furniture. How excited I was when I found it though. :roll: As for still being in love with the house, it's got to that old-married stage now where you live with all the warts and snorings but wouldn't want it any different. It feels like home in a way that nowhere else ever has.

No, I'm 1972 so it's this year for me - not that I'm really fussed, it's only a number after all. It helps that Mrs F was born in 1971 :wink:

Although as she likes to remind me, she has no grey hairs whereas I have plenty - the obvious retort being that she is the cause of them all, I had no grey hairs when we met, etc etc!

If we're going to have a shortcut button on this forum, it should be a "hack off the gypsum plaster and replace it with lime" button.

:lol: Never mind gents - think of the fortune in shampoo costs that male pattern baldness has saved you over the years, not to mention the environmental benefit of all that detergent not being flushed down the drain. Less need to retrieve hair from the plughole - less expenditure on hairbrushes, and for a period connection no need for antimaccassars on the armchairs.
