An off-topic question

I'm always staggered by the amount of expert knowledge on display here. I'd like to find a similar forum for asking gardening questions in, i.e. easy to use and full of good advice. I tried the RHS, but the forums don't seem particularly active. Any suggestions?

There are a lot of gardening groups on Facebook - have a look there to see if any appeal. There's a closed group called Allhorts which is made up of industry professionals, plus enthusiastic amateurs, which is pretty authoritative. Try applying there (there are no qualifications needed to join, you just have to be keen!).

Basics for getting good gardening advice....

Know and describe your soil: Clay, loam, chalk, sand, deep, shallow, moisture retentive, dry. May differ in various parts of the garden.
Ph: ... are hydrangeas pink or blue.
Aspect: does the area face NSEW
Space available: size indications on labels are erratic at best.
Shade: to what extent.

One secret of success is 'right plant right place'. The wrong plant may grow, but not well, or may be too rampant and need constant restraint. It can take years to become apparent that one has made the wrong choice. Years are something we can't retrieve.

Thanks guys! Maybe I will try a question on here then, though I do remember one seasoned poster saying "ugh, gardening" (unless it was "ugh, soft furnishings") My question is more about building stuff than what plants to plant - I've been gardening for many years and have some idea of what I'm doing, though I've never had a garden with a stream in it before.
