In London, staying at the Premier Inn Waterloo built on the site of the former lying in hospital. On the 14th floor and the extractor fan won't go off in the bathroom. Call reception and a very helpful man comes to fix it. Explains that these are industrial extractor fans needed because it's built on the site of an old building. It's the damp, you see. 'Damp?', I say. 'Old building?' I say. "Yes', says he. 'It can rise, you see'. 14 floors must be a record for rising damp. What hope have we got in our paltry two floors houses and cottages, eh? Vicky
