Alterations to floorboards

I’m seeking advice on what to do with our floorboards. Currently, we have what appears to be engineered or modern boards installed over a layer of insulation, with what I assume are the original floorboards beneath. I’m not particularly fond of them, and there’s a noticeable level change along the hall (though I’m not entirely sure why).

I’ve considered tiles, but I like the idea of reinstating the original floorboards. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so, or would it be better to leave them as they are?

I’d assume the step change would be due to historic extensions and the differing ground levels. What’s the building, context, age etc… the pics show either heavy wear to the hidden boards or a bull nose, telling me the height change isn’t a recent thing.

If you don’t like what’s there, rip them up. But expect that you won’t find a full floor of intact older boards underneath. You might be lucky, but best to assume you’ll need to do some repairs/sourcing of replacements.

Personally I love old boards, they tell a story or two and are honest.

From what’s visible, you’ll be needing some Bahco scrapers - 625 and 665 to remove what’s left of the black coating…

Hi there. Aww it’s a but annoying when you get modern floorboards you don’t like. When i bought my property last year, we had manky old carpet so it had to go anyway and we were super lucky to have original floorboards.

They are pretty good condition, but there’s a few issues we are dealing with but nothing we can’t solve over some time.

Live previous comment, you may find they’re in great condition… or not. If you absolutely hate the floors and willing to rip them up and have the expenses if they’re not in good condition and might need replacements, then I’d go for it.

But if not, your current floors don’t look too bad and if you like tile (like me!) but can’t get them in, then a beautiful patterned rug could be a great alternative.
