It's difficult to say for certain without knowing how they are put together, but they look pretty permanant, and better quality than most of the stuff available nowadays. It might be worth considering just moving the doors, and building a new frame, unless you are certain that you don't want a built in cupboard in the second bedroom.

I agree with Dave. The doors are probably the most important part, and they should be easy to remove and re-use. As regards the carcase/framework, you can try to dismantle it and see how you get on. If it turns out to be impossible, then it shouldn't be difficult to build a new one.

By the way, Marm, for any given topic it's always a good idea to try and add to the previous thread, rather than starting a new one. It helps readers to remember what's gone before.

Personally I'd be inclined to leave them where they are - it seems to me this is probably a rather nice original feature.

They might not fit where you want them moved to - and it does seem from the pics that the 'empty' alcoves are far more shallow than the ones with the cupboards.

I have not read the original thread, but it looks as if these are opposite sides of the same chimney and the alcoves have been deliberatly sized to give useful space on one side in each room. Seems a better set up than having equal (but useless) sized alcoves. If you move them it might look a bit odd though - or are you going to put shelves or something in instead.

Hi Mark

Original plan was to move the cupboard from one room to make a matching pair in the other. We use the existing one as a wardrobe but could do with another. Despite the photo looking like the alcoves have different sizes, they are actually the same depth. The alcove housing the cupboard we are considering moving is exactly the same width and depth as the alcove we're thinking of moving it to... which would hopefully make it not to difficult a job.

But having said all that we are now thinking of speaking to a friend who is a joiner to see about the logistics - ie cost - of building a new cupboard to match the existing style.
