Air vents

We have a Georgian house that we are renovating. Having spent a lot of time and money digging out the ground floors (filled in and concreted over) and putting in nice new flooring we are now rerending the outside of the house in lime (currently sand and cement). We live on the high street (fore street) and there is inevitably some road dust etc. When I took the old air vents off they were totally clogged up. Ideally I would like some that came in some outer casing thereby enabling you to unscrew the face to clean from time to time to make sure there is sufficient air flow.
Any thoughts / suggestions?

I am sure somebody will be along to advise you---all I can say is that our neighbours have cast iron airbricks, probably original to the house.(late Victorian).

If I couldn't find a manufactured solution to that problem, I think I would make something myself. Perhaps you could create a vent opening the correct size into which a grille would push-fit, and simply fix a couple of small metal lugs on to the grille, which had holes for screwing them to the face of the wall. Or modify the existing grilles in this way.

Never seen those. If you need air vents for a suspended floor, they need to work, I would imagine those flyscreens would clog up pdq. I guess they're more for high level use, eg a vent for a bedroom.
Surely a standard iron air vent won't clog up unless you live in a real frontier town?

Having provided our little house with an abundance of airbricks, we got mice. Apparently the holes in the airbricks are just the right size for rodent access.
The pest man has given each airbrick a neat mesh cover, which seems to have solved the problem, and I don't anticipate any clogging-up problems because all we need to do is give them a periodic going-over with a stiff brush.

hello, yes the Flyscreen Air Bricks you mention via the link to our website are designed especially for keeping rodents and flies out .
It is surprising but the the mesh will become blocked with dust and debris and so the fronts of these airbricks are removable for cleaning.
We recommend checking them every month in the first couple of months to see if there is a dust build up and if not it shouldn't be necessary that often, say every 6 months after that.
You are correct that these are not the cheapest option, our standard 9x3 air brick is £30 whereas the flyscreen air brick in bare metal is £85 so there's quite a price difference.
This is because the flyscreen (item FLY3) has several components, namely the frame, copper flyscreen removable front and four stainless steel screws to clamp it all together which all adds to the cost .
There is a discount for ordering online though that might help - when you check out use the code 5off and it will reduce the price by 5%
