I know lots of people dream about them but I'm not an Aga woman. However there is one sitting in our kitchen which I am about to advertise on Gumtree but I thought I would mention it here first
It has not been used for many years but probably worked when the flue was condemned ... with good reason :mrgreen:
Its an old style two oven cream beastie. 1950's? Oil fired

Free to good home. But there is always a catch ... which is that you dismantle it and take it away

Livias, in all seriousness, I would Ebay it at 99p start no reserve, buyer removes. You'll get some money for it - a reasonable amount I reckon if it looks good - and have a higher chance of getting someone reliable to take it away, compared to offering as a freebie on Gumtree.

My parents moved into a bank-owned repossessed house with the world's grottiest Rayburn in a conservatory. It's a long story but every time it rained the water from the whole house roof was draining into the Rayburn. It had big rust holes in the side panels. It went for over £100 - someone who restored them professionally bought it.

I did the same here with a grotty concrete sectional garage (£106) and an aluminum greenhouse that had very little glass left (£60) - both sold as "buyer dismantles & takes away", from a 99p start price. I wouldn't have been upset if they'd gone for 99p, the garage especially would have been a right pain to get rid of.

I would have been happy to put them on Freegle/Freecycle but you do get a lot of people who mess about on there and don't turn up to collect items. I found on Ebay if folks are bothered to bid then they're bothered to turn up & collect.

I would contact Classy Cookers and see what they will suggest as a price--vintage Agas are quite sought after.

I'd second Feltwell's suggestion because we did just that with an old Rayburn about five or six years ago. Same terms - buyer dismantles. We got £400 for it and the buyer came all the way from Wales! The buyer was running a refurbishment business and would buy up suitable models all over the country, then make a round trip to collect them all, taking them back to Wales where they would refurbish and sell them on.

We sold ours last year to a company - can't recall which one though - that came and dismantled it in an hour or two. They paid us around £500 iirc.....

I have advertised it on ebay, gumtree and classy cookers
I am told that old ones like mine are in less demand than they were a few years ago because newer ones are far more energy efficient, have digital controls and all sorts of such in demand features.
So we shall see ...

I shall be glad to get rid of it cos we can't put down our shiny new limecrete / underfloor heating until it is gone

We were told that our old Rayburn was worth the money paid because it was originally a solid fuel model that had been converted to oil. The chap who bought it was going to remove all the oil-fired gubbings* and covert it back to solid fuel as they are - or were - apparently in greater demand.


*let me know if my technical explanations are too confusing :wink:

OMG I can't believe solid fuel Agas are more in demand, environmentally alone. I grew up with one as a child and my parents used to send me up the top of the garden to the 'coal hole' in the dark to bring in buckets of coal! Used to have massive coal bunkers and you fed those pre formed brickette things in the hole at the top, if you weren't careful and Aga was a bit billeous you could lose your eyebrows and woe betide if it went out. The parquet flooring in our living room and kitchen lino showed the scars from where one of my parents carried red hot coals from the parkray in the living room to the Aga to try to get it going again. I would say though that in the great storm of 87 when we lost power for weeks we still had full cooking and hot water facilities so it wasn't all bad! You can't beat putting one of those lids up after coming in on a freezing day to warm up and also making toast with the tennis racket thing

to say nothing of doing the ironing, drying the dogs, the boots, bunches of herbs, drop scones and pancakes, opening lids on jam pots--(3 seconds on the hotplate) you name it the Aga does it.

A local charity "boutique" has one as part of its interior design scheme. If it's in cosmetic good nick an interior designer might take it for a shop or pub interior.

We bought a reconditioned old model Rayburn a few years ago, solid fuel.

It was delivered fully assembled, and the two men moved it very easily just using a couple of 2' scaffolding pipes as rollers. One man moved the stove on the rollers, and his mate picked up the emerging roller at the back and popped it in at the front. To steer round corners he put the new roller in at 45 degrees.
Doubtless they were very practised, but it looked very easy, with no struggling or heavy lifting at all.
They went up steps on a pair of scaffold boards in the same way.

We had struggled to dismantle the old collapsing stove and smashed up the bits we couldn't lift. The man said that was a shame - they would have bought the old one in any condition, and moved it out easily on the pipes.

As for moving such a lump being easy, an old engineering friend of mine with a passion for steam traction engines once told me that the heavier the object the easier it is to move. His rationale was that, above a certain weight, brute force is completely useless and so additional machinery and technique is required, making the task physically easy. An everyday example would be changing a wheel on your car; impossible to lift the car unaided but trivially easy with a suitable jack. He explained all this in the context of the rear wheel of his traction engine weighing 1.5 tons!

We just re-did our kitchen and replaced the old solid fuel AGA with a shiny refurbished (old) solid fuel AGA... It gets lit every Friday evening and cooks through the weekend before being left to go out again (I'm only home at the weekend and my wife doesn't think it worth keeping fired up for the rest of the week). In fact the solid fuel AGA is better suited to this regime than either oil or electric. Gas not an option as we live in the rural middle of nowhere.
