hi all. as an owner of a draughty period farmhouse, my fiance wishes to add a cooker, not an ordinary cooker but a range of the aga style,( to add warmth and style+ she knows how to cook on one, at least thats more than i do!!) we have gas fuel and have to have a powered flue as we have no chimney or outside wall. its use will be for cooking only as a new heating system is being installed.we are normally out during the day but in all weekends..tending the the restoration and the farm. Does anyone have any opinions? electric or gas? running costs, we believe about £12 a week, hopefully the heating will never have to come on as we have a small house and the obligatory multifuel burner and thick socks and overcoats...i'll be attending a heat store course for the servicing and installation side..many thanks i await the responses... :lol:

My inexpert view is as follows:

An Aga will be an unquantifiably better sales feature if/when you come to sell the house.

A Rayburn will cost you considerably less.

I am with Penners.

You will probably see your money back on an AGA, you probably won't with another brand of Range. I get the impression that AGAs are a tad more reliable than some too.

The fuel source doesn't make much difference I don't think. The deciding factor for us was the flue; it was going to cost about £3k for a long new flue, oil pump and oil supply. So we bought a 13 amp electric.

Lastly, unless you really know what you are doing, don't buy a secondhand AGA off Ebay and have it fitted. There is more to an AGA than meets the eye and even a new one can have issues. A new one has a guarantee, a secondhand one may not. If you must buy secondhand, buy it from one of the larger secondhand AGA specialists. And try to ensure that if it is a converted solid fuel model that it has been done properly - better still avoid conversions.

In your situation the 30 amp or 13 amp electric Aga would be the choice not only being less costly in using 'stored heat' at 3.52p/kWh but also able to be programmed according to your 'in-house' time in the weekends.
Also note that the type of cooking is slightly different from the oil/gas/solid fuel burner than the electric Aga which is essentially a massive heat store and the heat is conducted by a fan to the ovens when necessary.

The 30 amp is a lot more expensive than the 13 because it is basically a night storage heater.

Unless you know something I don't, the fan is only there to aid emission of cooking smells through the vent, on the basis that the 13a unit doesn't have a chimney. It is not there to draw in heat as such.
