Advice please on kitchen lighting

Hello,
I have 13 ceiling light fittings in my kitchen ceiling fitted with Megaman CFL GX53 bulbs. Of the 13 only two bulbs still work, and we are plunged into darkness. We have been told the bulbs are no longer made. Do you think this is right? And if so any suggested ways round this?

Just Google CFL GX53 - there are loads of options out there. And go LED rather than CFL and they'll last much longer

Thank you Noj. Will they all be standard fittings then? One of the old dead bulbs I took out said it was 13w but it's a CFL. What sort of wattage am I looking for with an LED? I don't want anything too hot but on the other hand I do want to be able to see to cook!

I agree with noj - choose LED lights where possible. Just be aware that they are available in various 'colour temperatures' including a 'bluish' colour that many find rather too cold and clinical.

Wattage wise, they are approximately twice as efficient as a CFL lamp, so to replace a 13W CFL you should be looking at something around 7W.

LEDs also run cooler than CFLs. In fact it's hard to find a downside to them, unless you specifically require a traditional 'bulb' shape, but choice of bulb shapes is growing.

I'd try getting a few different types of LED bulbs (brands, colours temperatures, wattages) and mix and match, until you find ones you like.

Some bulbs give a horrible strobing effect to anything moving quickly, some are not as bright as their traditional counterparts of supposedly the same lumens. Of course you don't find this out until fitted! :roll: Also, although LED bulbs are meant to last for literally years, some of the cheaper made ones simply don't, which is another reason why buying different brands will help you sort the wheat from the chaff.

GX53 is the fitting/type - so any GX53 should fit. If LED then probably choose 'warm white' and wattage is not really relevant any more, you need to compare lumens.

A Megaman CFL 13W GX53 Hi-Lite gives 520 lumens the same as a 7w LED - and the other joy with LED is that the light is instant!
