Hi all
We have no idea what to do with this fireplace , ideally would like to paint this grey and green- what paint would we use? Also can we replace the fire basket ? Any advice to us novice renovators would be soooooo appreciated!
I'd suggest fitting a small stove rather than a new fire basket. A little Godin or Deville would look fab and fit in with the Art Deco style of the fireplace. Or if that doesn't appeal, perhaps something like a Hobbit stove. Either way, a stove is much more efficient than an open fire, and you get a lot more heat in to the room. If you need convincing, take a look at this - https://assets.publishing.service.g...867429/burning-wood-consult-bsria-report1.pdf
Seems a shame to paint what is a very original fireplace. I know many people have ripped out those art deco - 1920's - 30's tiled fireplaces, but then people used to rip out Victorian fireplaces, as many of us know! Give it a few years and folks will be bemoaning all those past owners who removed the art deco stuff.
If you really *really* must paint it, at least use a water based paint so it will come off easily with stripper in the future. Bedec MSP would do the job just fine (MSP - Multi Surface Paint). Just bear in mind that whatever you paint it with, it won't be as heat resistant as the naked tiles.
Personally - I'd concentrate on the rest of the room and see if you can come to love the fireplace as it is now when all the rest is done. You can always paint it later.
Paint that original deco fireplace .... No!!!
What a dreadful idea.
Original tiles in good condition, hearth surround undamaged, hearth undamaged.... a rare survivor.
Surely the last thing one should be doing in a period house it to make it look 'more modern'.
That fireplace is the inspiration and centre point for decorating the room. Paper, carpet, furniture, light fittings.... and windows of course.
