I've been renovating a room/workshop in our house which had not seen any attention for decades. The walls were old lime plaster in very bad condition. I have taken the traditional lime plaster route to redo the walls: remove all loose material then harl coat, scratch coat, float coat, and a finish coat in two passes with the final one seeing a sponging and then an attempt at smoothing out with a wet trowel. However, I am a novice and after doing the finish coat I am not so happy with how the finishing on the first wall I attempted turned out. It is OK, but has rough patches and already some minor cracking round the edges (due to a combination of the top coat being too thick and over-trowling, I suspect ?), but having improved (a little) as I did the finishing on subsequent walls I would quite like another crack at getting a nice smooth uniform finish.
I'm hoping those with more experience can answer the following: is it possible to put another finish coat on over the top and, if so, when is advisable? The wall in question was kept damp for a week and is now in the process of fully drying out (it is about 10 days since application of the finish coats). Is it necessary to wait until the wall has completely dried out or could I apply another top coat whilst the plaster is still a little damp but set pretty hard. If it is possible, what is the process? Presumably, a key is required and then two passes as before?
